This is a continued discussion from when to take probiotics, so please either read that article first (or after).

The first and most important detail in taking probiotics is, DO NOT take them with chlorinated tap water. In fact, stop drinking tap water today and feel better right away. Drinking the best water ever will start your gut in the right direction. You can take 100 TRILLION live cultures and kill them all with polluted tap water or antibiotics (which are also in tap water).

“From the gut comes the strut, and where hunger reigns, strength abstains.” – Francois Rabelais

Now that we have the basics out of the way, let’s get more into the detail.

There is a ton of conflicting information as to how to take probiotics (before meals, between meals, during meals etc…). I say take them all the above! It is hard if not impossible to overdose on probiotics, so why not just go for it! You will start feeling increased clean energy within a day or two. It is like drinking coffee without the negative side effects.

Caution: Although their might be no such thing as “too much”, the first few times you take probiotics, you may be killing off quite a bit of yeast and bad bacteria. This can load up in your colon and make you feel pretty sick. So, I advise you to start off slow at one small dose per day, then increase to twice a day (and so on). Also make sure you are taking in plenty of clean fluids. Water with lemon, or herbal teas are wonderful. My personal favorite is Spring Dragon longevity tea with goji berries.

So, the next obvious question is, what kind? Should you take pills, drinks, time release or whole food? To me, they all seem to work well. I like to stay as natural as possible, as the more research I do (I try to do everything I write about myself), the more I realize there is way more to nutrition than the scientists know about. We find out things like taking pure vitamin C will actually remove iron from your body. This is because vitamin C is always paired with iron in nature, so it “looks for iron” when taken without it. How many other things are missing from purified substances? We have no idea. So why not just take the whole food when possible?

See probiotics 101 for whole food sources of probiotics. I drink Cocobiotic (from Body Ecology) every day, and then mix in some other forms like kim che on occasion to round it all out. If you like to make things at home, you can try some kefir starter from Body Ecology.
